Antony Radd

Sample of work by Antony Radd

Antony Radd was born in Devizes. His great-grandfather, Henry Galpin, was miller at Worton Mill. He owned the cottages opposite the mill, living in No.4, now called Mill Leaze, to which was attached the 5-acre field behind. Henry died in 1956. Antony came to live in Worton about 2 years ago and had not visited the mill since he was 6 years old! More information and historical photographs can be seen on this website under Old Mill History.

From an early age I was drawn to the upward sweep of Roundway Hill and the scarp of the Marlborough Downs. With few or no trees to disturb the sight line, the demarcation between earth and sky is clearly defined, drawing parallels with the sea, offering a duality in which the horizon becomes the point of balance.

I am intrigued with the idea of the singularity of origin, that All came out of Nothing, I have long pondered the colour of Nothing, an entity which must have existed before the Creation. Thus in a search for icons of pure intuition and fundamental Understanding I find myself creating pictures of Nothing, using colour to express the experience of the world around me rather than the form, being more interested in the positive dualistic experience suggestive of Unity in Diversity, of the sense of Oneness that at times pervades the experience.

'I work by a process of observation and reflection, drawn from the experience of the Downs and from that of La Albufera in Valencia, Spain, which leads me to paint and to write, to play with colour and words'.

Antony Radd.
