Modigliani meets East European Folk Art. Paintings By Joanna Powell

Joanna Powell is an artist specializing in paintings of folk musicians. She studied Fine Art at The Storey Institute, Lancaster before moving to Scotland where she brought up her family, exhibited regularly, and became immersed in the rich musical culture there, both as a musician and an artist. Initially she worked as a portrait artist, practising on her own children who she sketched from the moment they were born until adulthood, but soon started to sketch her fellow musicians as well, which then developed into the current painting style. She has taught art to adults and children for the past 20 years in Scotland and has recently moved back over the border to Sunderland Point, Morecambe, Lancashire.
Joanna has become increasingly interested in collaborations between art and music -sketching musicians during a performance and letting the music they play influence the outcome of the painting and was artist in residence at The Scottish Storytelling Centre, Edinburgh, during Tradfest 2015, where she sketched musicians performing there.
Her oils capture the love every musician feels towards their instrument, the strange contorted positions they find themselves in and the magical world they enter when they become “lost” in the music they are playing.
Her paintings have been described as “Modigliani meets East European Folk Art”.
